GHS and BS5609 are complementary standards: GHS dictates what hazard information must be on a chemical label, while BS5609 dictates how durable the physical label and ink must be when shipped by sea

I am repeatedly hearing some confusion from customers and potential customers about GHS/BS5609 labels. These labels are in high demand and the market is growing, so I am sending a condensed email here to make clear what these labels are and aren’t.

  1. GHS and BS5609 are two terms that mean the same thing.  These are labels that are certified to be used on products that deem them necessary.  These are normally for products being transported over open waters.  The Certification signifies that these labels will last for a period of time underwater and remain adhered to the product and readable.

  2. There are a few levels of Certification. To officially be certified and usable as GHS/BS5609 labels, they must be Level III certified.  Level I and Level II are not usable for these requirements.

  3. The Certification is not just for the label, it is for the process of printing, so to qualify a label must be combined with specified printers and ink to qualify.

Best Label Printer does offer many GHS / BS5609 products, all are Level III certified to work with many brands including the Epson ColorWorks printers.  We have plenty of this material available in our warehouses, so we are happy to be of service when you locate an opportunity.  Please feel free to Contact us if you need more information or free samples
